Bishop Noll, Andrean, and Marquette and other Gary Diocese Catholic High Schools are coming together to form a hockey club this year.
“The goals of the season are simple,” says Coach Rich Sobilo, who graduated from Bishop Noll in ‘87. “[We’ll focus] primarily in the fundamentals of the game while having fun and enjoying practices and games and camaraderie with the team… to instill an unselfish, unified team atmosphere amongst the various schools, and to grow the program so there are more kids wanting to play next year and the year after.”
So far, many students from the schools called out have attended practices at floor hockey and ice rinks at Mann Park, Rowan, and Orland.
“The primary reason though is to provide kids that may never have played hockey an opportunity to play.” said Coach Sobilo. “We want to represent the member schools and Diocese with dignity and class.”
Although high school hockey is an expensive sport, Sobilo believes this shouldn’t deter students from joining the sport.
“It bothers me that other programs charge the kids several thousands of dollars to play hockey,” he says. “While ice time is expensive, we want to make the sport as accessible as possible to all kids. There are creative ways to make a program work and not bankrupt hockey parents or players.”
If you are interested in attending practices, contact Coach Sobilo at [email protected] or ask Cody Kaminski, a participant in this program, for practice times.
