After coming off a disappointing loss to Hanover Central in the semifinals of sectionals last season, the Bishop Noll baseball team is back in action, gearing up to break their 17-12 previous record.
Head varsity coach Paul Wirtz expects a lot from his returning players, believing they will be motivated simply because of the desire to conquer the conference.
“I expect my players to work hard every day,” Wirtz said.
With six seniors returning, leadership should not be a problem this year. The goals that Wirtz has for his baseball team are like any other team out there.
“The biggest goal we set for this season is to make a long post season run,” Wirtz said.
The Warriors’ fell to No. 1-ranked Lake Central 0-1 their first game of the season on March 27. But they rebounded against Clark 3-2 on March 29th when junior Jonathan Frankovich hit a walk-ff home run in the bottom of the seventh.
“Wirtz just told me I was up to bat, and Coach Nohos told me ‘you know what to do’,” Frankovich said.
It was Frankovich’s first walk-off home run at Noll.
Ranked No. 8 in the region, Noll’s team hopes to make a run in the conference and defeat some of the area’s top teams. The boys will be playing four games over spring break, including a conference game against Marquette on Friday, April 6.
