There is no doubt about it that social networking has become an integral part of the modern world. A social network is an online service that allows users to build up social relations with others who share the same interests and activities. These users are able to connect with others through the Internet, using various methods including email, instant messaging, chat rooms, and games. There are hundreds of social networking sites, the most popular being Facebook and Twitter, that are used worldwide. These networks have millions of users, and the amount is constantly rising.
However, other less-known social networking sites, such as Tumblr, Pinterest, and Google +, are becoming more prominent on the World Wide Web. What is great about these social networking sites is that they cater to certain interests, therefore meaning there is a social network for everyone.
Tumblr allows users to post multimedia and other types of post via microblogging. Through this, users are able to upload media to a short-form blog known as a “tumblelog.” Also, most of the website’s features can be accessed through a “dashboard” system.
Pinterest is primarily a pinboard-styled social network that allows users to share an infinite number of photos and other sorts of media with others and comment on them. Pinterest users are able to create themed boards, where they are able to upload photos using the “Pin It” option.
Similarly to Twitter, users are able to “follow” others. Google + is a social network that is somewhat similar to Facebook, except it is organized differently. There are three major parts of this network: Steam, Circles, and Hangouts. Stream allows the user to see posts made by others in their Circles. Circles are used to organize a user’s friends into groups. Hangouts are places where a group of friends can connect through video chat.
Surprisingly, these little known social networking sites have been on the rise. In fact, these social networks have gained over hundreds of thousands of followers fairly quickly. Tumblr, Pinterest, and Google + are just a few of these rising social networks. Other sites are also slowly becoming more popular with the public. It will only be a matter of time before these little to unknown sites become as popular as social networking powerhouses like Facebook and Twitter.
